Do you remember playing War! as a kid? When 2 players flipped over the same number card, you both screamed War!, put out 3 cards face down and then flipped over the next card to see who won. Then there would be the ‘judging’ of the face down cards by the losing player – you got a 2, 3 and an 8! Who cares about those cards! But if there was a face card or an ace in those face down cards, then that was the absolute worst thing that could ever happen.
We’ve created Sight Words War!, which we hope will be (nearly) as addictive as the original game.
How to play:
⇒ War is a two-player game. Deal the same number of cards to each player.
⇒ Each player puts their cards in a face-down pile in front of them. Each player then takes the top card of the deck, lays it down face up and reads the word on their card aloud. The first letter of each word is bolded. Players should compare the first letters of each word. The player with the letter that comes first alphabetically takes both cards and puts them face down on the bottom of their pile of cards.
⇒ If the first letter of each word is the same, then the players are in a War! Each player should take three cards from the top of their pile and spread them out in front of them, leaving them face down. Then each player takes the next card from the top of their pile, lays it down face up and reads the word aloud. Players should again compare the first letters of each word, If they are different, the player with the letter that comes first alphabetically takes all of the cards. If they are the same, the players go to War! again, and so on.
⇒ The first player to collect all of the cards wins the game.
This eduprintable includes a color and black and white version of the deck. Print on card stock and laminate for durability. Cut along the dotted lines to create the decks, keeping each deck separate.
